Dog Thoughts: Number One

What is that scary Movie? The Woods Have Eyes? IDK Anyway.... If you own a dog and you think they are not watching you then you are totally wrong.

Your dog is watching you at all times and many of ya'll don't realize it.  What do you think they are doing? Now, none of these thoughts apply if your dog is sleeping bc then he is just well sleeping. So for the purpose of discussion let's talk about awake dogs in the same room with you. Awake dog in room with you= watching you. Therefore, if your dog is aware of you at all times, and you are not using that to your training advantage then you are missing out!

Now we aren't talking about the gratification that comes from another living being tuned in to your every nuance... that is just bonus!! We are talking about how to have a balanced and happy life with your pet. I want the dogs to be happy, as well as, the humans. If you are not concerned about whether your dog is happy then, in my opinion, you should not own a dog... a fish or turtle or as a stretch perhaps a cat but that would be a stretch! I am a crazy dog person!  One of the most important things that I have learned from my Goldens is that they are much like humans in that they are very very in tuned to their leader.
Daisy with some Christmas Swag
Look at Daisy! She knows exactly what is going on. She is looking at me here bc I am the pack leader.  Does she love me? Is that adoration in her eyes? No, I can't sat yes to that, but does she recognize that I feed her, dictate when she is crated and when she can chase a ball etc. etc. ??? I sound like I am her jailer as I read this so let's expound on that. If you or I were in jail would we at all times know where the person in charge of us was? We would know his patterns, his timing, what would make him mad, and what would get us more time in the daylight in the prison yard. We would study him and read his emotions. We would watch his face; listen to the tone of his voice; know his habits. Thus, I give you your beloved Fido! He is doing the same things that we would do if we were totally dependent on another.

So you ask, why is this important? Well, knowledge is always power and according to D. Trump power equals winning...not political at all just couldn't resist!
Daisy and Champ
Anyway, if you want to relate to your pet on a deeper level, or perhaps, have a better behaved...( our standards, not theirs) animal in your home; then it behooves you to understand them. So... Thought Number One is that your pet is watching you at all times and you should use that to communicate your love and your wishes.

Lola and Lakes Do Not Mix!

Sometimes, it takes an accident to make you realize how fortunate you are!

From left: Daisy, Moses, Lola, Champ, Duke is in background.
January and February are the best time for me to exercise my Goldens. The weather is perfect and my life is post holiday calm.  I love this time with them.  We normally walk around a three mile lakefront path. They see a lot of people and animals and are tired enough to be content for the rest of the day.  I normally walk all four at a time.  As you can see from the above picture, Duke in the background does not like to walk on a leash, nor does he fetch.  He lives to hunt lizards and beyond that he is totally noncompliant and uninterested.

The Lake
This Wednesday changed my well established routine forever!  I park at a club and I normally let Lola run around a little because she loves to find the errant tennis ball from the courts beside the parking lot.  Pretty much we are a familiar site down there so nobody really minds this breach…well at least until now.  We are right next to a large lake and up until now it never occurred to me that Lola even realized it was there.  My dogs are never allowed to go in Lakes as that would be too dangerous as snakes and alligators are very common here.  On this day, Lola found the lake… I was waiting with the other three all leashed up and ready to go when I heard a shout that a dog was in the lake. I ran down the dock expecting Lola to be splashing in water lilies chasing ducks.  I was so irritated, thinking how mad my husband was going to be about me putting a wet, muddy dog in the car and worried because we are having the coldest temps here in four years!

Lola was not only in the lake, but she had become disoriented and was swimming out into the center of this large lake with no idea how to get back.  I screamed, promised treats, banged her leash and after a minute or too she was out of earshot. I was hysterical and had almost resigned myself that I would have to watch my beloved Lola drown right in front of me.

It was high noon… seriously it was! Nobody was on the tennis courts except two friends. As luck or divine intervention would have it; my sweet friend, Sheryl  recognized the panic in my voice and came running! Everybody knows how much I love my dogs and clearly she loves dogs too because without a moments hesitation she got two of the nice club workers to push us off in a canoe to save my sweet Lola Belle. Now would be a good time to note that it was very cold; we only had one paddle; I don't swim well, nor know how to canoe; and WE HAVE ALLIGATORS!!!
Thank God, Sheryl is ten years younger and ten feet taller than me and she paddled us out to the center and I was able to pull a very tired and frightened Golden Retriever into the canoe. We headed back Euphoric!! It was an I am woman hear me roar kinda moment. Not only were we wives and mothers but we were rescuers, first responders etc. etc.  We allowed ourselves a congratulatory moment to laugh and note that neither of us had been in "The Lake" and I gallantly offered my unselfish friend a kidney if she ever needed one.  Note: it is all fun and games until the canoe overturns! Lola started moving, and wait for it…. you guessed it!!! The canoe overturned! It all turned to …. well you know… in a moment, a flash, blink of an eye,  etc. etc.  The canoe was sinking and we were far from the dock! My husband questioned if we could touch the bottom; for the record, Sheryl tried to touch bottom and could not. We swallowed lake water, were frozen and we were most assuredly not all right! Sheryl was exhausted from doing all the paddling… remember we only brought one paddle and we were both in shock from the cold water. Apparently all of the lunchtime diners were watching from the club dining room.  "It was like watching a movie" was a common refrain. For a moment to be honest, I really was panicked ….I am NOT a good swimmer.…something I am going to fix!!!

Sheryl recovered her wits and swam to the dock! Lola following her naturally instincts went with the survival of the fittest mentality and swam with her.  Sheryl hoisted her up to Giovanni,  (a member of the club staff) who took her to safety!  Giovanni, henceforth to be known as Gio the Gallant, had come to help from inside the club bringing life preservers and towels!  Where was I? I was on my back struggling to reach it to the dock…think infant survival swim float. It seems like it took forever, but it is amazing how pride, embarrassment, and fear of alligators all sweep away when you fear you are drowning!

Finally, I made it to the dock and held on to a boat lift trying to recover, asthma in full bloom, legs unusable and thoroughly spent! On the dock, a worker answered my breathless questions, "Is Sheryl ok?'; "Is the dog ok?".  All answers being YES, he introduced himself in the most courtly manner., "I am Victor; this is my first day on the job. Can you grab my arm?" I hope he doesn't quit!!! Poor guy having to pull half drowned housewives out of the lake on day one!

A very tired Lola
Lola, finally, has some street cred with her pack. Sheryl has proven herself to be an unselfish, brave and loyal friend!….She has some street cred too!

I have learned a few good lessons which I will write about later in Part Two.

But at the end of the day, the ending is happy and we have a good story to tell.

Kim and Lola

SUMMER TIME IN THE SIXTIES IN

SUMMER SUPERLATIVES SIXTIES STYLE

INSPIRED BY ALL THE 70'S REFLECTIONS

If you grew up in the 1960's,  summertime was all about:

Bactine, Band-Aids, Bonanza, Bubble Gum and Bologna!

OUR parents generation remembered what it was like to spend the summer listening to the radio and how boring that was so they considered sitting in front of the T.V for eight hours a day perfectly acceptable!
You played outside in the morning. If you were the first one outside you rode your  Banana bike up and down the dirt street or sidewalk until your friends were awake.  You weren't allowed to ring the doorbell until 8:30 a.m.  because you were always kinda afraid of the elusive Dads because they were always going to work, coming home from work, going to the club for a round of golf, or having a cocktail. Think Mad Men...very accurate. There were a lot of Larry Tate's on my street. The only time they really paid attention to us was if somebody was REALLY in trouble like we had accidentally broken a window or dented a car.
All the kids knew it was going to be a great summer if some body's parents ponied up for a Slip and Slide!Or you might walk to the 7-11 or whatever little Stop and Go was around the corner to get whatever a dime or max a quarter could buy. You went without any adults...they would look at you like you had three heads if you even thought they were going to venture out in the heat to buy a stupid comic book. Actually, the trip to the store was usually encouraged because it could eat  up a whole hour in what must have seemed like an endless day!  You might pick blackberries along the road and EAT THEM WITHOUT WASHING THEM FIRST! The Big boys might throw pine cones at each other and hopefully not you because let me tell you that hurts.

You played till noon went inside sweating and suffering from mild heat stroke and had a sandwich...always a sandwich, some chips, and some water based drink. Think iced tea, Lemonade, or Kool-Aid. Hawaiian Punch was for special occasions.

You settled down with your drink mustache,  black bottomed, sidewalk scalded, sticker stung feet to watch the black and white or high tech color console TELEVISION SET until it was cool enough to go back outside! Now, if you were like me, my nanny/maid, whom I loved more than life itself, was normally resting at this time too. That always stunk because she liked to watch her "Stories"; therefore, a masterful negotiation always ensued. It went something like this: "Bowow ( Don't ask, long story, nobody called their second mothers a normal name), If I go read my Nancy Drew for 30 minutes, Can I watch ANYTHING??" Remember you were held prisoner by the T.V. Guide and its unchangeable edicts. You might not be able to find your King James but you damn sure knew where the T.V Guide was and you were in BIG TROUBLE IF YOU LOST IT! Fortunately, Bowow and I  shared some similar tastes in pop culture.  She loved game shows, and Bonanza. We both thought Little Joe was super cute, Uncle Bill was handsome, Mr. French was kinda stuffy but nice, and Don on Lost in Space was Hot. To quote my Mother or Bowow,  I don't remember "He could put his shoes under my bed anytime." I know I am leaving out a ton like the Brady Bunch, Hazel, I dream of Jeanie, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillys, Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle, Hogan's Heroes etc etc.
Alas, the pure, unadulterated joy of watching t.v. with the sheet over the couch, picking at the scabs from the mosquito bites hence the sheet, with the window A.C. unit blowing directly on you!

Around four-o-clock, it was back outside until dusk. The nostalgic ubiquitous outside activities of a 1960's child are pretty routine.  One episode of watching Opie Taylor ought to do it for you. The only variation was we used to try to throw rocks at the bats as they swooped in for the night. Also, we spent a lot of time in garages trying to master "The Locomotion" and singing " Your Momma Don't dance and your Daddy don't Rock-n-Roll". I looked up the other day what a squeeze box was...I never knew...always thought it might be an accordion. Lawrence Welk played one also. That's another story.

For Next time: Rainy Days 60's style!

Kim

Curing Hot Spots in Dogs

Doing Battle with Hot Spots
Seven Helpful Tips

Every Spring as the pollen starts to emerge, my dogs come down with a skin irritation known as the dreaded Hot Spot!

This is a week old spot on Daisy
I have tried about every medicine from my vet, as well as, many homeopathic remedies. All I can say is that experience is the best teacher and what may work for me may not work for you. But If you are like me then battling this monster especially in a multi-dog house can drive you to try anything!

Hot Spot First Aid Station!
Tip Number 1: Checkout your dog's coat at least once a week especially during high allergy seasons.  Look for wetmarks on the coat from licking. This is a tell tale sign that something might be brewing under the fur. If you can catch it early then that is often half the battle. Very Important! When Daisy got her first hot spot, I let one of my older dogs who must have thought he was a Dr. in a past life lick the wound.  I thought how sweet it was that  he was tending to her. Wrong! No Licking from any source is a must!  Think dry wound!!!

Tip Number 2: As soon as you detect it, cut away the fur so that you have at least a 1 inch margin around the area.  I know you might be reluctant to do this at first because it will be ugly and it will take time for the hair to grow back. But trust me in the long run, it will be worth it to have done it so you can quit worrying over this spot.  The alternative might be to become like the character in Macbeth shouting "OUT DAMN SPOT!"  I have tried that too ...no luck haha.
Blue scissors for Pets, Black scissors from Sally's
There are three ways that you can remove hair. You can use an electric razor that you have bought for this purpose. Get a good one designed for animals if you can.  I bought a human one at the drugstore and it did not work.  The hair is often crusty and gooey and it ruined it on the first attempt...colossal fail! B. Go and have your vet shave off the hair. C. Buy a pair of hair trimming grooming scissors for dogs.  My dogs are afraid of the razor sound, but the trimming scissors do a nice job if you take your time. You have to be very careful not to cut them and make matters worse, but that goes without saying.

Magic Powder
Tip Number 3: Clean the wound.  I have tried all kinds of things from Betadine to Betadine scrub to Hydrogine Peroxide. You will probably need to do this more than once a day if your dog can reach it to lick it. I also use a first aide powder because it seems to dry things out.
Love the spray!
I also like a cream like Panalog if things seem to be going south quickly.

Tip 5: Call your vet if it seems to be growing in size or does not improve.  He or she will probably prescribe an  oral antibiotic and in some cases an oral steroid like Prednisone.

Tip 6: Keep at it everyday! You might be tempted to let a few days lapse an let nature try to heal it.  Maybe? but it has never worked for me.

Think "ANTI" in your approach to healing. The big 3 are: antibiotic, anti inflammatory, antiseptic. You can also throw in antiitch too.

Hot Spot almost healed!
In closing, keep it dry, but not itchy, control infection, and be patient and vigilant.  This too will pass and hopefully you will only have one.

In my next post, I will discuss some natural remedies that I like and have found effective.

Disclaimer:  Call your Vet first, I am not a Vet, nor did I sleep at a Holiday Inn last night. This should not be used as a substitute for seeking medical attention for your pet.
Thanks for checking in!
